Riverside, CA – October 10,  2024 – One year after the launch of WRCOG’s Food Recovery Program, the initiative has made great strides in assisting our member agencies in meeting state-mandated goals. Alongside fulfilling these requirements, the program has successfully recovered tons of food before spoilage, marking a significant milestone in both environmental sustainability and community support.

In response to Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383)—a California state law designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills—WRCOG created a program that aligns with the state’s environmental targets and helps local residents by redirecting surplus food to those in need.

Currently, five cities—Jurupa Valley, San Jacinto, Murrieta, Moreno Valley, and Perris—are actively engaged in the initiative. The program utilizes the “Careit” platform, connecting food donors with local organizations to recover and redistribute edible surplus food. Over the past year, WRCOG has diverted more than 145 tons of food from landfills.

Rita Rogers, Chairwoman of the WRCOG Executive Committee and Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Perris, emphasized the significance of local partnerships. “This initiative embodies the spirit of community giving and mutual support. Through the collaborative efforts of businesses, nonprofits, and local governments, we are meeting state’s environmental goals and providing essential resources to residents in need.”

SB 1383 requires California businesses to recover 20% of edible food by 2025, redistributing it through food recovery organizations. WRCOG and its member cities have worked tirelessly to comply with this mandate, ensuring that the program strengthens both environmental health and food access across the region.

Dr. Kurt Wilson, Executive Director of WRCOG, emphasized WRCOG’s role in supporting its member cities. “The dedication from our communities and partners has been inspiring. WRCOG is proud to stand alongside our member agencies, helping them navigate legislation like SB 1383 to ensure they meet sustainability and food recovery goals.”
